The Robber flies [Asilidae]
one of the largest and most abundant families of present day insects. Distributed through all parts of the world, over 7000 species are known.
This is a predator. The Robber Fly seize their prey in flight and inject their victims with saliva containing neurotoxic and proteolytic enzymes. Adult robber flies attack other flies, beetles, butterflies and moths, various bees, dragon and damselflies, ichneumon wasps, grasshoppers, and some spiders.
Our Robber fly was about 12 mm long and we found him in New Mexico.
